Gordon Memorial Hospital District is proud to offer nuclear medicine services to help providers diagnose and evaluate a wide range of medical conditions. Using advanced imaging technology and small amounts of safe radioactive tracers, nuclear medicine allows us to see how organs and tissues are functioning in real time.
Our imaging team is committed to providing accurate, high quality diagnostic studies in a comfortable and supportive environment, helping your provider make informed decisions about your care.
What Is Nuclear Medicine?
Nuclear medicine is a specialized imaging technique that uses small, safe amounts of radioactive tracers to diagnose and sometimes treat disease.
These tracers travel through the body and allow detailed imaging of organ function, tissue activity, and bone metabolism. Because it evaluates function rather than structure, nuclear medicine can detect abnormalities very early in the disease process.
Nuclear medicine plays an important role in the diagnosis, treatment, management, and prevention of many serious conditions.
It is used across a wide range of specialties including cardiology, pediatrics, oncology, and other medical fields. Nearly every major organ system can be evaluated using nuclear medicine techniques, and there are many different types of nuclear medicine studies available.
Conditions We Evaluate
Nuclear medicine studies may be used to evaluate:
- Heart disease and blood flow concerns
- Gallbladder and biliary system disorders
- Bone pain, fractures, infection, and bone disease
- Digestive system function concerns
- Cancer-related conditions and treatment monitoring
- Organ function abnormalities across multiple systems
Services Offered
Gordon Memorial Hospital District offers the following nuclear medicine studies:
- Cardiology Stress Tests – Evaluate blood flow to the heart and identify coronary artery disease
- HIDA Scan – Assesses gallbladder function and bile flow
- Bone Scan – Detects fractures, infection, inflammation, arthritis, and certain cancers in the bones
- Gastric Emptying Study – Evaluates stomach function and how food moves through the digestive system
What to Expect
During your exam, a small amount of radioactive tracer will be given by injection, ingestion, or IV depending on the study being performed. After a waiting period, specialized imaging equipment captures detailed images that show how your organs and tissues are functioning.
Most nuclear medicine procedures are painless. Our imaging team will explain each step, answer your questions, and ensure you are comfortable throughout your visit.
