A Story of Care Since 1905
Our history began in 1905 with the earliest records showing the presence of a hospital in Gordon Nebraska. In 1931 local physician Dr. F.W. Vaughn moved the hospital to 600 North Main Street to better serve the area. It was later sold to Dr. F.W. Wanek and Dr. W.K. Wolf who continued to provide care to Gordon and surrounding communities.
As medical needs in Sheridan County grew so did the community’s vision. In 1949 a group of local businessmen ranchers and farmers came together to plan a modern hospital that could serve the growing population. In an incredible show of support the community raised $150,000 in just six weeks an extraordinary achievement for a rural region.
This effort led to the opening of Gordon Memorial Hospital in 1952 located at our current site. In 1959 the hospital district was formally established securing long term sustainability and local governance.
Built on a Dream, Sustained by Purpose
The hospital fulfilled a dream long held by Dr. Wanek to create a medical facility that would attract physicians to rural Nebraska while providing residents with the high quality care they deserved. His legacy inspired decades of medical excellence and dedication.
Over the years many long serving physicians including Dr. Metcalf, Dr. Tom Wallace, Dr. Owen, Dr. Panzer, and Dr. Hutchins helped strengthen that foundation. Many of them were native Nebraskans committed to serving where they grew up and making an impact close to home.
